Cat Litter Packaging Redesign
Cat Litter Castle
Using the ABC thinking method (Analogous Thinking, Biomimicry, Connect & Develop), I redesigned a traditional cat litter jug into a recyclable corrugated box that doubles as a cat playhouse. Inspired by multi-use packaging and natural shelter behaviors, the design reduces waste, lowers costs, and creates a playful, functional experience for pets and owners.
Project Statement
Conventional cat litter jugs create issues for both consumers and the environment. While made from HDPE plastic, many recycling facilities don’t accept them, and lack of awareness often leads to disposal in the trash. The containers are rarely reused, offer no added value for pets or owners, and are not cost-efficient, making them both unsustainable and impractical.

ABC Thinking Model
Analagous Thinking - GuineaDad
The packaging of GuineaDad products is innovative in how the box can also be used for the guinea pigs to play in and eat
Biomimicry - Clownfish in Anemone
The way that clownfish use anemone as shelter is similar to how cats use boxes as homes beneficial rays to penetrate the product.
Connect and Develop - Video Tutorial
Having a video that can be distributed on social media or for commercials.

Initial Sketch

Early sketches explored alternatives to the traditional cat litter jug, focusing on how a corrugated box could function as both packaging and a playhouse. These drawings helped visualize structure, usability, and the transition from container to interactive pet space.
Final Design
The solution is both innovative and creative: transforming a cat litter jug or pail into a recyclable corrugated box that doubles as a playhouse. This lowers litter costs, makes recycling easy, and gives new life to packaging. Plus, consumers are encouraged to keep buying to expand their cat’s playhouse.
